Multiple user-defined alliance chat channels have been in the works for some time already. Until then, we'll just have to sit tight.
I personally think its a bad idea to carry any important conversation in chat, because it leaves people out of the loop who were not online at the time. Using forums means no one has to repeat themselves, as well as that their conversation is more considered and their ideas more well thought out.

I would like to follow on from this point. The permanent establishment of a chat channel for leaders of alliances in this game will just have the detrimental effect of dumbing down certain alliances even further. The decision making bodies of alliances should confine themselves to forums where policy making is structured and all those entitled to view it, can do so and contribute.
The effect of the chat channel will be to elevate personal conversation into an area that should be reserved for planning, policy and strategy. The net result will be the creation of an elitist but trivial chat room.
My alternative is that Devs must now work to improve alliance forums which have, in my view (and others), been neglected for far too long. Forum functions and administration at alliance level are woeful and way behind the standard expected by any browser gamer. Superusers haven't even got the power to delete posts from there own alliance forum!!!
The way forward is not to establish elite chat channels but to update alliance forums and their administrational functions without any further delay
