We're excited to announce the roll out of a new event involving the invasion of new, mysterious underworld forces that have been spilling out across the whole of Elgea & the Broken Lands for the past weeks: Underworld Unleashed!

Reports have been trickling in that Kerberos troops have been showing signs of hostility, so be on your guard!  

The hordes of Kerberos troops have begun leaving behind a strange new unique item, the Heart of Darkness.  When volumes of Hearts are brought together in the same town, the hearts are consumed when increasing thresholds are reached.  Players that reach these thresholds are awarded with medals and a spot on the leader board.  There are rumors that the College of Silence is hard at work investigating these strange objects, perhaps there are more layers in this enigma...

HEARTS OF DARKNESS LEADERBOARD & REWARDS
The College of Silence is fervently dredging through ancient texts and manuscripts, attempting to decipher the most recent enigma to emerge from the Kerberos invasion: the Heart of Darkness. The College now encourages leaders of kingdoms across the realm to assemble the Hearts together; it would appear that specific volumes combined react destructively, leaving behind strange arcane energies in their wake.  More study is needed, and the College is awarding leaders with medals as they progress their research on the destroyed Hearts of Darkness.



  • When Hearts of Darkness are collected in one settlement, increasing volumes are consumed as they are brought together awarding the account with a reward.
  • Players are awarded with a unique, leveling medal to show their progress in the Invasion Event.
  • Medal progress is unique to a player's account. 
  • Hearts of Darkness are a tradable commodity on the marketplace.
  • Players can see their progress and compete on the Underworld Unleashed leader board.

Are the hellmouths in BL working yet?  I have yet to see an Underworld Army in BL other than the forces that come out of the Tower in Calumnex.

Please advise

Tournament announced. Two hours, forty-two minutes until the first whining. That's got to be a new record.

Muggles should be rejoicing about a hunting tournament. You can attack stationary enemies with elite commanders. All it takes is a little effort and minimal skill. If you are too lazy to hunt, apparently you can even have other people send you the materials for your medals, or you can buy them. Willow, as a chat gamer, you should be happier than a feline roleplayer in a lurker tree. Now people can express their friendship for you by helping you to accumulate a new medal. Chat gamer paradise.

I was under the impression that faction armies from The Tower also drop the Heart of Darkness material.

Last night, people explained to me that the BL Hellmouths were not spawning Kerberos units. Then Cerberus acknowledged that the distribution had been uneven. So I retract my criticism about the whining. Even if The Tower faction armies drop hearts (which nobody has confirmed conclusively for me), it doesn't matter much because their armies are still running the typical routes in Calumnex, not the whole continent.

I've scanned the whole of BL now for the Underworld camps and you can see the results https://www.factionaction.dewt.me.uk/html/index.html" rel="nofollow - here . I'll scan Elgea later but now I need to go get some sleep.

This is the development version of the site so may go down every now and then as I sort stuff out before moving it to the normal Faction action page.

I've found the hellmouth openings but they are not spawning underworld factions in Tallimar, at least not in areas around my cities or others in this region.

I have a more general complaint.

When giving a member a medal, you can opt to not have it announced in AC. (actually you have to check a box to have it announced in there)

Could the devs please turn these announcements off for this tournament? It is very irritating when every medal upgrade results in a big AC announcement. It also makes real discussion go out of sight fast.

Why do some Region's in BL only have 1 Hellmouth silbeaur for instance, thats according to tens map , if thats the case you dev's cocked it up plus never seen a underworld in silbeaur.

I think you dev's need to to create another event just for BL seem most of us cant participate. harness the elementals would be good??...

while I'm in moaning mode dev'S explain this from your own BL faq on website.

Q: How do the new Quests work on the Broken Lands?
Soon after The Broken Lands launch (once players and cities have begun settling in) a new Quest arc will begin – a series of interlinked Quests which will run for several months. Individual players and Alliances will be presented with choices, where they can investigate, scout, thieve, attack, defend, and raid through an evolving story arc.
This is not simply following instructions or doing what the Quest text tells you. It is about making choices. There will be little consequences and small rewards along the way, and then at the end the continent will be permanently changed by the players' combined actions.
This is a new continent. The Quests allow you to explore it, and change it.

WHERE ARE THEY!!!!

There are 2 Punisher of Kerberos IV medals in the leaderboard. The second one should have been Punisher of Kerbeors V.

I've discovered that they move around fairly quickly. 
When they arrive at camp site, they sit there for around 4-12hours. Mostly They camp at the squares: Standing Stones, Monastery's, Mausoleum, Lawstones, stuff like that, etc.

I have not discovered a fixed spawn rate. They have been appearing every now and then with intervals. Maybe new pops 3 times a day or something like that?

Having checked the worldmap datafile for the number of tiles in each region and my database for the number of Hellmouths in each region I got the following:

So the land area in BL only accounts for 19% of the total map area while it has almost 43% of the Hellmouths. If you take the Ocean out of the total area equation then you get revised land % of 78% and 22% for Elgea and BL respectively. So BL does actually have more Hellmouths than the land area breakdown would suggest there should be.
What is beyond question however is the number of Underworld armies that are being spawned by those Hellmouths. Reading previous posts about the lack of those armies in certain areas gives the impression  that the devs are relying on us to tell them which areas are not getting any spawns. Given that the devs are the ones controlling the server that does the spawning I'm sure they have a much better way of finding that out rather than sitting waiting on us telling them so the impression is probably down to my poor reading/understanding of my native language.

I have to agree with the sentiment of the post from zzal that this is a completely biased tournament. Even if the collecting of the HoDs is only the first stage of a truly multi stage event the bias in the spawns has given a massive advantage to those that are based in Elgea. I'm not sure what could be done at this point to truly level the playing field however.

npc's from tower faction also drop hearts. other then that I havn't found any underworld forces around in calumnex or farshards so far. I don't know how many hearts are left by regular underworld forces, but the shadowmages left only 1 heart behind in 4 attacks on a mine that I occupy. when I attacked 'many' of them they didn't leave anything

It also appears that there is a huge imbalance in hellmouth distribution within the upper and lower continent. So far it appears there is only one Hellmouth in Chulbran and Kingslands respectively, but there are a boatload in the High Hills.
If Tensmoor's map is correct, it appears that the hell mouth distribution is fairly even throughout Elgea, but not in the BL.  

Additionally, I have seen none around my cities in Perrigor, Arran, Keshalia, or Kul-tar in Elgea.

Just an FYI, there are Underworld units active in Glanhad and Strendur that I have seen. Hard to catch, but they do seem to respawning there.

A complete breakdown of the number of tiles and hellmouths by region is below. I doubt it would be possible to get a completely balanced distribution of the hellmouths by region as they are dependent on the terrain. The number of possible hellmouth locations (suitable terrain) in each region is shown in the 6th column.

although the dev's have tried to give us illians different style event which we do appreciate there effort, even if its a flawed attempt.

We would like however some explanation or solutions if possible from the dev's to what's happening if anything.

Seems to me since you started making AGE OF ASENT content for illy has slowly dried up to a trickle which we as a community begrudgingly understand because of AOA , but come on guys couple of years ago you showed us a new UIv4 that got put on the backburner you introduced broken lands great!! but it seem to be devoid of any meaningful content that I can see anyway. No story arc , no poi like the rift HOC ect ect.

we the community would like some answers to these questions. How about a Q and A session with your vision for illy post AOA???

I am very grateful for the tourney. 
It just seems very strange to me that entire regions could have unr 5 hell mouths when others have 50.  I am just trying to understand if this is some part of a grand plan that will balance out later in the tourney, a random occurence that is part of the programming, or a glitch that the devs intend to fix.

Just because some regions have more Hellmouths, does not necessarily require that they spawn more Kerberos armies. The spawn speed could be different. Each point could also send armies into nearby regions.

Also, just because some regions have more Kerberos armies, does not necessarily mean that they are of identical size. People have reported Gathering size up to Myriad size. That's a lot of variation.

If the number of hearts dropped in each region varies wildly, then that specifically indicates an imbalance. The other factors are just visual. Drop rate corresponds directly to medal advancement, as I understand this particular tournament.

I think Ten Kulch pretty much nailed it. As he points out - they can send armies anywhere from any Hellmouth and - certainly at present, the important thing seems to be the gathering of the HoDs. Whether that will change at some point in the future who knows - all we can do is go with what we know at present.

Having said that, after an initial sighting of two armies near me (which I killed) I've seen no more despite constant checking. I've no idea if the spawns have dropped of in Elgea as well or if it's just a case of they don't feel like coming near me. To be honest, I don't really care anymore.

I have killed over 10 packs of these NPC's without receiving a single HoD or Exp for my commanders. At most, I get 1000 gold...I also haven't seen anything larger that a pack where they are popping up near my cities. You cannot hunt very far out, since they move pretty fast. I've missed more than I have killed. This is my first tournament since I have started  playing, and I must say, I am disappointed. There is no way I can get to the upper levels of the medals, in fact, I gave many away so everyone I knew had a chance of getting a medal. I don't like to complain, but it would have been okay, if I at least could get commander Exp for hunting them, but I guess the groups are so small it doesn't even register. It seems very unfairly distributed across the map, and the groups sizes are inconsistent as well, across the map. I also should point out that the hearts I did get were from the very beginning when I went out and cleared all the paws I could find that weren't being collected because no one realized yet they started dropping parts.

It is correct you get gold on the actual report but you don't see the HoD drops in the report.

This is a bad event Ouch because:

1) Location. It plays too large a role, due to spawn rate, spawn density and despawn rate.  Anyone who has cities within 3 hours of the spawn locations have such a huge advantage since the spawns move so quickly.  If you have a cluster of cities within 3 hours, you have won the jackpot.

2) Cavalry is the best attack units because of #1.  
    -->If you have mostly cavalry and a good location your advantage over all other players is laughably huge.

3) Prestige speeding harvesters for the win. 

Good Idea, bad execution. 

A better event:
1) spawns much more random (not clustered)
2) spawns don't despawn until killed or event ends 
    -->(more in theme with a wave of them coming to overtake the land)
3) the longer a spawn is around the more it grows: every 8 hours double unit amount.
4) some spawns seriously punish different types of units.  i.e, if you want this spawn camp you better send swords or archers, if you send even a 100,000 cavalry they will all die.  ... force people to scout the squares.  Like literally units with stats like:  
Spawn Example Defense: 15/5/15/100000 
Spawn Example Defense: 25/1511111/25/10 
Spawn Example Defense: 15111111/275/115/10111111
etc (just never one that has all crazy defense)
or the idea of instant death for some units vs defense:  DEATH / 123/ 122 / DEATH
if you send the death types they die. 


This would make scouting a requirement.  Currently there is no requirement, calvary is just 1000% better due to speed and lack of any kind of real punishment (for large players).

Just wanted to make some clarifications.  First off, this isn't a tournament, this is a running event that will have a conclusion.  After the event is over, the Kerberos units will be sticking around as the link forged between the underworld and Elgea & Broken Lands by the Tower is permanent(?).  

The Underworld Unleashed event is something new and will continue to evolve and impact Illyriad with things yet to come.

I should have been explicit in the post, I just thought that saying it's a "New Event" and not a New Tournament would be sufficient.

We have adjusted spawn rates for Broken Lands and will continue to monitor the event as it progresses.

I'd  be interested  to know how Count Rupert can be credited with an average of more than 500 Hearts of Darkness gathered per city on his account (or is he draining all the x-Crows allies?), since the beginning of the event, when in my neighborhood, I can't see Underworld troops in more than gatherings, yielding less than a score of parts whenever we can hit them!

What do they say about real estate?  Location, location, location...  I don't know the algorithm used for hellmouth placement but there are plenty of examples in Illyriad where resources and NPCs are not evenly distributed throughout.

Sorry, but I have to reply to this.

I have been in a hunter tournament organized by nCrow, and back then, Count Rupert was a Beast.  I was pretty dedicated and I managed to get more kills than the #2 in the +10 city league, while being in the -10 league myself. Using only 4 cities. I cleaned out every Legion of Giant Rats in the whole NW of Elgaea to do that.

Rupert is dedicated to tournaments like this. He's shown it before and he does it again now. It's all about attitude.

But tournament or not, you might want to check their movement. 

I don't mind them moving around, but maybe you should try playing with bows or swords for a bit. It's very annoying to see them move within 4 hours of showing up (I had one moving away within a way shorter time yesterday).

I am not even trying beyond map visibility range. But I think I should at least be allowed a decent chance. Which I do not think I have atm.

In terms of teamwork within alliances, I can say as an nCrow player that Count Rupert sent me hearts; I didn't send him any.  Rupert is a dedicated player with a LOT of experience harvesting.  If you're impressed by his hearts, you should see his pile of rat furs.

I don't have an visibility on imbalances of hearts between region or spawn rates, but there are a lot of players in northeastern Elgea, and he still stands out from the pack.

He really is just that good.  It's a privilege to be in an alliance with him.

Again, my question shouldn't be seen as any whining/complaint against Count Rupert or any alliance, but an open enquiry to 'dem devious devs' developments.

We (more or less seasoned) players of what I like to consider as a real time, extensive, ecologic  model of a social system, try and understand how it works.

(And I'd consider as  a clever and mind challenging, feature that many regions in Illyriad shift from an average, tedious set of features.)

Clearly there are many more event related NPC units in the Wolgast and/or Winlost areas than most, I'm not sure why this is even a question based on the sheer numbers. There would be no way in hell someone could harvest that many units in the areas I've seen. Do we know when the event will conclude?

In the Wolgast and Tamarin area, spawnings have now declined and other areas are showing increased spawning, ie; the BL; Aindara, Clarien, The Long White, and Strendur.

Fun fact: In an experiment to see if it was able to be done and if I could gather any info, I killed a legion sitting on the Hellmouth spawning portal near my town. I was successful in killing the Legion, but gained no useful info. Now there are 84 HoD sitting on top of the portal, unable to be harvested! I didn't think that far ahead, assumed my troops would die in the search for information Confused

Watch for two armies trying to occupy the same square. If they are not from the same Underworld Division, they will fight each other and drop hearts. I watched a Myriad in Wolgast, that I had just scouted, turn into a Host when another division tried to occupy the same square. I scouted after and found 2 units from the attacking army survived the fight and joined the winning army. Within an hour the army left, and I harvested the hearts. Smile

I've made similar observations that the Underworld Armies are killing each other, and that the losing army (smaller one) joins the winning army (bigger one) afterwards with the remaining troops. It is a bit weird, since you should think the losing army would all die in a battle, like usual. 

There are plenty of "free Hearts of Darkness" around, after these battles, if you know where to look.

How am I, a citizen of Elijal, supposed to catch any of those underworld thingies? I had to scroll all the way to Djebeli, and I found three of those mobs. I sent my fastest cavalry, but it took them 12 hours to arrive. By then, someone else had alraeady killed them.
Wouldn't it be fairer if there were a spawn in every province of the Realm?

I was just scrolling through my notifications for an entirely unrelated matter, and I discovered that Count Rupert sent me 19 Hearts of Darkness, shortly after I posted the above message. This was doubly unexpected, because Count Rupert and I don't know each other, and I hadn't asked anyone for Hearts of Darkness. If I hadn't scrolled so far down, I would never have learnt to whose generosity I owe my "Slayer of Kerberos V" medal.

The way I see the event running is that Underworld Armies will be forever available to us now. The resource they drop, Hearts of Darkness, will become useable in the near future for whatever. Bonuses to alliances attack/defense strength, gold income, or whatever. You will need a specific amount of Hearts to achieve these bonuses within the alliance and alliances should be farming the hell out of these right now to be able to be some of the first to get the bonuses and therefore an advantage over their foes.

So yes, I think you will be able to move your HoD's around till you quit. However, I am not sure :) This is speculation.
