By this time I should have the military aspect of my towns down pat but I don't. I am an Elf and Dwarf on my alt. I know the elf should concentrate on archers for defense and axes for the dwarf. I need to also have swifts for fast movement. I assume I need to have elites/commanders of the same types. But I can only have five commanders so by the time I make elite armies each with the correct amount of troops per type, I have no commander left for my general defensive army of different types of troops.   I tried to make elite divisions under one commander but of course an elite div needs a commander to be elite. I need some sort of template to go by and make sure I do things right.   Is a large army of mixed troops not needed when you have elites? Ty

As you note, you can only have five commanders in each town so you have to choose what the town is going to do and then choose the commanders appropriately.

If you want each of your towns to have its own defensive army - presumably including spears - then you will have to use one of your five commanders to lead that army.

Or you could choose to specialise each town and have one town set aside only for defensive troops, while other towns had other troop types.

Generally speaking specialising your towns is more efficient, but requires them to be close enough to each other to support each other.
