From Midnight server time on the 17th of May through to Midnight on the 17th of June, any member of any alliance in occupation of these squares receives credit for holding the square.

 Any army arriving (= the so called combat occurance date) BEFORE midnight 17th of May will NOT be counted. So even if you have an army that arrived one second before the tournament start and stays there for the whole duration of the tournament not a single second of your occupation will be considered. So make sure that your armies arrive AFTER the tournament start.

Credit is based on the length of occupation of each square.  Time occupied by an alliance on each square counts towards the Alliance total.

 

This credit is on an alliance basis - individual players cannot participate in this tournament.

 

In order to take part in this Tournament you most have to submit your Tournament API key to me other wise I won't be able to track Occupation times for the Squares. I will a post link for players to input there Tournament keys, Player names and PlayerID at a later time with explanation of what to do. (We are now using the Combat API key. The deadline to submit Combat API keys is 3 days before the of the Tournament)

 

You are not allowed to leave your alliance and join another alliance while you have any armies on one of the Tournament Squares

 REGIONAL PRIZES

1) The alliance that holds that square for the longest period of time, from 00:01 server time on Tuesday 17th May to 23:59 on Friday 17th of June) is the Regional Winning Alliance.

GLOBAL PRIZES

 

1) All activity on these tournament squares in each region will also be aggregated, so the top 3 alliances that overall have the most amount of possession across all squares will be the Global Winning Alliances, ranked First, Second and Third.

2) This runs for the same period of time: from 00:01 server time on Tuesday 17th May to 23:59 on Friday 17th of June).

3) All players that belong to the Global Winning Alliances who were involved in holding - and defending - that square (they must be involved in combat on the square at least once during the month) receive a Global Prize.

From Midnight on the 17th of May  through to Midnight on the 17th of June, any member of any alliance in occupation of these squares receives credit for holding the square.

Just to make this clear:
Any army arriving (= the so called combat occurance date) BEFORE midnight 17th of May will NOT be counted. So even if you have an army that arrived one second before the tournament start and stays there for the whole duration of the tournament not a single second of your occupation will be considered.
So make sure that your armies arrive AFTER the tournament start.

How will you be monitoring who lands on unoccupied squares and for how long each player occupies the square(s)?  Is the occupation granularity down to the "minute"? 

I am presuming the API key will only provide info if combat occurs so there will be potential for a lot of uncontested occupations throughout the four week tourney.

The API key provides information about the type of the attack (EG if it's occupation attack or a fake attack). It also provides the occupation time for that army to the second.
The script will check the outcome of the combat (was the attacking army destroyed or not?).
If the 'attacking' army is a reinforcement from the same alliance it'll check whether the occupation time of the new army is higher than that of the existing defenders. If yes, the occupation time will be changed accordingly. If not, one of the defenders already has an army there with a higher occupation time than the new army.

The script also calculates the occupaton start date plus the occupation time and if that is over (meaning all armies have left the square and there is no new army that occupies it) it'll mark that occupation as ended. The occupation end date is equal to occupation start date plus occupation time. The occupation time however is adjusted when a new army reinforces the square.

EG:

Your army arrives on the 18th of May at 1am and you sent it there to occupy the square for three days.
Occupation start = 18th of May 1am.
occupation time = 3 days

Then you send another army that arrives on the 20th on 2am and let it stay there for 2 days
Occupation start = 18th of May 1am
occupation time = 4 days 1h
If nothing else happens: occupation end = 22nd of May 2am

I guess alliances should check which player joins them during the tourney.

To add on this: When the script encounters this it'll produce a warning message that Koda will see.
And it'll account the occupation time to Alliance A. So the player in Alliance B will help Alliance A with this.

We need three things from each participant in order for you to join the tournament.

a) Your player name (so basically you name in the game)
b) Your player ID
c) Your Combat reports API key (this may change if the tournament API is releases in time)

Here is the link to where all the stats about the Tournament will be handle.  currently it has a mix of fake real combats in it so people can see what it will be showing. Currently it has two fake Tournament sq for testing. I will be taking these out on the 14 and wiping the database then too. Btw for the combats it will show all the players and there alliances that were involve in Defending. Also at the bottom of everypage it has when the database was last updated. So everyone will know if people try to cheat.  let me know what you think. and if you see any problem/misspellings.

Someone suggested to use the Google Chart API. I just had a look at it and it looks quite simple to use.

So (live) charts are possible. Now - what do you like to see in a graphical manner?

As Koda already mentioned we'll prepare some statistics about blooediest battles and so on after the tourney.

Basically said: Since we have all the data we can create all kinds of charts or statistics. It's just a matter of creativity and time to develeop it.

I also think it would be more attractive to more players if there was a few leagues or divisions depending on alliance size. eg: using population rankings- Division1, page 1 alliances. Div2, page two alliances. Div 3 all others.

Based on Digioso's post on the subject I would say that the occupation starts from when Player B arrives.

The Tournament statistics page is looking a bit messed up, was looking okay a hour or so ago.

Hi all,

we had some issues during data collection today. That's also the reason why there are currently no database updates running.
Those issues have been addressed now (meaning I adjusted my code accordingly). When Koda gets back we'll reset the database, read all battle reports for today again and enable the update schedule again.

We're sorry for this. No data will be lost in the process since we can read the combat reports again and rebuild the data from them.

One questions on the status of the tiles - the grid at http://tournament.bestmagicbears.com/illy_tournaments.cgi?tid=1
shows no one occupying, but when you look at the actual tiles there are armies on the tile. Does this me that the army sitting on the tile is not registered for the tourney?

It is probably that the database is still being updated. However it could also be that as you said they did not register or that they arrived on the square before the start of the tournament.

We are trying are best to correct this problem and ones it is fixed we have to fix another issue with timeouts and a time zone.  Ones all these are fixed i will clear the database again and run the code from the start.  ok people the Tournaments stats people is up and running and now it will only show battles that happen in the last 30000 seconds. But you can still see past combats if you use the calendar at the top of each page. Please keep in mind the database hasnt been getting updated because the code is updating a new database else where and when the database is fully updated to current stuff i will import it over to the right database and will go back to running the code after it has been imported over

I changed it where it will only show combats from the past 7200 secs (main page only) again you can still all combats if you go to the top of the page and use the calendar and select the days you want to see. You are likely to run into the issue where it times out. I am pretty sure there isnt much we can do about that. I hope to have the database completely updated with all the correct times by this weekend.

To shine some light on the bugs we had. :)

1) Initially we downloaded the api key for one player, then all his reports, then did the same for the next player. Problem: If player B is on a spot before player A but we downloaded player A first this caused problems in the database. The fix was to first download all API keys for all players and then start with the oldest available report.
2) Some of you noticed this bug. There was an enemy army already on a spot. You sent a larger occupation army, defeated the enemy but the script was not giving making you the new occupier. The reason for this was: Both you and the defender provided battle reports for this battle. However in the case when we read the defenders reports before that of the attacker the attackers occupation time was not counted. This is because the defenders reports says that the attacker send an army with the 'Occupy' command but it does not state the occupation time. Only the report of the attacker states the occupation time. The fix was to mark the defenders report as incomplete in our database so that the report from the attacker can provide the occupation times.
3) You may have seen that on some squares the occupation times were abnormally high. EG some alliances were occupying a single square since 9 days although the tournament isn't even running that long. So that should be impossible. The reason is some kind of an anti-cheat system. Well, it's not really cheating.
You send an army to a spot. This arrives at 1pm. You gave your army an occupation time of 1 hour. So your army automatically leaves at 2pm. Someone else sends an army which arrives at 3pm. So the square is unoccupied between 2pm and 3pm.
The game doesn't provide a combat report or anything when an army leaves a square. This means that the player who's army left at 2pm will get credited to be at that spot until 3pm because only then another player arrives. So that player gained one hour of occupation time although he wasn't occupying the square. We tried to amend this by calculation the occupation start time + the occupation duration and then set the occupation end time accordingly.
For some reason however this caused very weird results. So for now we've disabled this system. Since all sqaures are under heated battles the chance of this happening is very low. And even if it does happen... Well, I'd say that the player just got lucky for now. :P

I am pretty sure we are able to do most of these if not all of them. Digioso will be able to say for sure if are able to do them or not.

For that one -Alliance that held the most- it can be split up further...
-Alliance that held the most squares Simultaneously
-Alliance that, over the entire tourney, held the highest amount different squares (e.g. if Alliance A held Middle Kingdom at the start, But lost it, and gained Wolgast later on they would have held two different squares over the course of the tourney)
-Alliance that Held a square for the Longest
-And of course the opposites:
 -Alliance that held the least squares simultaneously (i have a feeling this will be a tie)
 -Alliance that, over the entire tourney, held the least amount of different squares
 -Alliance that held a square for the shortest

Separate figures for Elgea and Broken Lands would be interesting, as would the number of troops crossing the ocean in each direction.

Figures for BL and Elgea are possible but we cannot provide numbers for troops crossing the ocean. We are not tracking where the troops come from.

No Rush! I understand that you have a lot of work to do so please don't feel pressured to get it done. I'm sure everyone will be willing to wait for them (whilst rebuilding troops for the next tourney, of course).

It might be worth defining what
-Most Contested Square(s)
-Least Contested Square(s)

Is this about how many troops died or how many times it changed hands or the number of players/ citys involved in fighting for the squares ro Alliances. I would suggest the first one but it may not tell the whole picture.

How long a bit?  The webpage seems to still be reflecting the error.

To scan though 14124  combat report it took about 14 hours and then I had to scan though all the report that happen in that 14 hours and will keep having to do this until i can get as close to the current time

I guess I'm puzzled why if we're through the initial batch of combat reports, why it hasn't been fixed since this occurred quite early in the tournament.  Wouldn't the error have occurred somewhere in those 14124 combat reports?  It shouldn't even be in the 14 hours unless the error is still occurring on battles in Windlost.

Yes the error did happen during those first few days but isnt just something that I can go though the database and clear out bad data. Yes i guess i could delete all the data that happen from 17.05.2016 00:00:00 to 2016.033.21 20:31:33 and then upload the missing data from the other database but that will require alot of work and if i did it that way there is a chance for bad data to remain in the database. other reason to keep scanning though the combat until it is caught up to current times is some people submitted API keys late or I forgot there API key (can happen when dealing with over 700 API keys). I do realize people really want the right times but it isnt just something that can be fixed right away. I am hoping that posting what I currently have will tie people over until i can get the current database uploaded which could be sometime tomorrow or the next day.

I understand that adding features can be difficult to implement during the tournament.  However, is it possible to locate a list of all players on the statistic page whom have submitted valid api keys in order to participate?

The reason I ask is that there has been some concern about some player attacks showing up from alliances that do not appear to be holding squares and are therefore not listed on the tournament page.  Since not occupying is a valid strategy and even the use of alts with valid api keys to “support” other alliances isn’t out of bounds it still raises questions of player integrity and perhaps even tournament transparency when it is regularly occurring during the event.

Whist there may not currently be any solution or technical means to prevent such activities, it would be helpful to know whether or such players are simply being spoilers and distruptive to the spirit and intent of an event.

Perhaps the devs could someday provide for a paid lockout period for tourney squares preventing non-registered event participants from landing on them but in the meantime the only way for the rest of the playerbase to fully understand a players’ intent is to know whether or not they are participating honestly.

Thank you again for all the hard work and effort in organizing and running this event.  Is there any chance you would make your tools available in the future should other players want to organize similar activities?

The problem with doing this is some player didnt submit the API keys with the right name or playerID (which is why it is alot of work just to create a list of player and what alliance they are in) Before the end of the Tournament I will create a list of players who took part in battle (that won and had set the army to Occupying) to try to get there API keys. I was going to be looking at the output I get when the code gets run but I am getting that about every 5 mins.

I more then welcome players from alliances that aren't taking part to attack the Tournament Squares. I knew it was going to happen. Today my army that was holding a sq was cleared by Baynights while it does suck but it isn't a big deal to me i only lost 40k knights

This idea really wouldnt work for a number of reasons and not something I personally would want. The main point of this Tournament was for nf awareness month and to have fun.

It is up to Digioso if he wants to release to the public. A few thing to keep in mind is the coding is written is perl (I dont know how many players know perl but if something goes wrong no one will be able to fix it) and using MySQL as the database and requires having a webserver. in my opinion it isnt the great of an idea for the code to be release to the public

The error was fixed on the 21 the times will be broken for a little bit but they will no longer keep getting bigger and bigger. sadly the last time i was scanning though the combat it come up with an error we now have something in place were we no longer have to worry about errors coming up when we are doing this mass scans.

My general idea was to create a tournament system that is open to other players as well.
The system is written to support multiple tournaments running at the same time.
Right now it doesn't have any admin interface, though. Since both Koda and me are able to use phpMyAdmin to manage the database that was neccessary and left me time to work on other things.

But yes, writing an admin-interface so that everyone can run tournaments is on my todo-list.
In the future I'm also thinking of moving from MySQL to a PostgreSQL database. This should provide better performance. Right now that's not really possible because I'm focussing on keeping the tournament running and also because I'm using some MySQL features that PostgreSQL doesn't have built-in. So that requires further development time.

Just got this when trying to log on to tourney site...

Internal Server Error

Hi people.
DO NOT send you armeis with the "Is Covert" options against the tournament squares !!!
If you do this your battle will not create an entry in your Combat Report API and therefore CANNOT be tracked.
This is what happened here. At least this is my only explanation for this.

fonkori defended against SirTwist at 12:49 on the 17th.
But in fonkoris combat API there is no evidence of fonkori ever arriving and occupying this square! This means from our perspective fonkori has never been on that square and we are not able to track his occupation times.

Edit:
To add even more on this.
Zolvon from Love And Freedom arrived later to assist fonkori on that square. Although Zolvons report was accurate and he send his army with the intend to occupy this wasn't credited to him.
The system looks at the report. When it encounters a defender (fonkori) and an attacker (Zolvon) but zero losses in the battle it assume that they are friendly to each other. It then simply prolongs the occupation time of the ALREADY present occupation by the one of the newly arrived army if the newly arrived army has a longer occupation time. But since there was no occupation in our database Zolvon's arrival could not update an existing occupation time and therefore he didn't get any credit either.
I'll look into the code on how we can try to amend this so that at least later arriving alliance mates trigger an occupation time.
