Commanders:

We are slowly pushing out a few updates here and there and wanted to let you know about one that should have just gone live (at the time of this writing.) We wanted to add some more realism to the game and map so when you cross over a large body of water (including fresh water and rivers, the ocean etc) your caravan will ride a ship across. This is an initial add-on that will act as a foundation for possible future updates, and will smooth the ride down south. (For what, I do not know.) Refresh your browser if you do not see the ships.

We also added in an Alliance-wide announcement that will tell all of your alliance mates the subject of an arriving alliance mail. (This will pop up in alliance chat.) Thanks to player Taryn Bzar for continually shooting message arrows at me concerning this enhancement.

Below you will see the ship types and graphics. Thank GM Cerberus for more fantastic art, and GMs TC and SC for all of their hard work! (Thank me for getting all of the credit.)

Now back to battle people!

Yay for pretty ships!  I assume that this is basically an added graphic that in the future might represent something, but that actual movements speeds are not affected?

Also, how do animals, faction troops move across water?

Do we make the ships?

The military ship icons are, in my mind, slightly too small to see.  If possible please increase their size just a bit. From a distance above 5 or 6 squares they just look like little mounds of grey.

I think it's going to be hard to differentiate between trade, military and diplomatic movements.  I assume the diplomatic ships will be invisible if not within diplo visibility?

Unless the ships actually ADD something or are necessary for crossing water, what's the point?  Adding nice icons is okay, but, imo, the problem here is that you can still cross water without them so they add not strategy changes to the game.  I think I'd rather see some basic improvements to this already pretty darn good game. Sort of take it from good to great.  Maybe, long term these are intended to become something but for now it's pretty "ho hum" to me.

PS  I may be overstating this or at least speaking more strongly than I should.  You decide.

I guess you could say that we will be naval gazing instead of navel gazing in the future.

As I said above, these ship graphics are the ground work for something else. So, yes, you are speaking more strongly than you should. But go for it! :)

It may be difficult for someone who hasn't been around as long to understand, but the devs have promised navies for a VERY long time, and any incremental step in that direction is a huge deal to us who have been waiting for it for so long.

Another suggestion:  make the sails of the ships represent the troops/diplos/traders affiliation to the player.  So your own ships would have blue sails, confed/alliance ships would be green, NAP would be light yellow, neutral would be yellow, and at war would be red.  Just a thought.  That way you could increase the size of the military/diplo ships too.

Doesn't the banner on the ship already signify that?

It would be great to have to make your own boats and have a change of mechanics for sailing such as getting rid of 'moving at the slowest units speed' in the water because that doesn't really apply on a boat since we aren't actually marching together they are riding a boat :P

No troop ships?
Be nice to load troops on to ships to speed them long distances.

Just a thought

I can see the sea ships on the map, but when my units cross the river next to my towns there's just a sword/caravan/trumpet Unhappy

Yes, it does, but I personally believe that coloring the sails would not only make it easier to see but also would allow the diplomatic and military ships to be the same size as the trade ships, because they wouldn't be confined to the boundary of the already standard sized army/diplo banner.

Excellent overall, but why is the first one a boot with lampshades on? Maybe a nice decorative piece for the coffee table? * Getting out her empty toilet roll, sticky back plastic and glue, and trying to make her own...

LOL

Do gathering units ride ships too, or do they still swim?

First forum post...  Can a wind direction determine speed of the ships?  Will there be ocean/water NPCs to hunt?  Ocean/water resources to gather?  So much future promise and I'm just a newbie trying to wrap my head around what is already available!

A fantastic addition that opens up whole new realms of possibilities.

When do we get commander skills to increase movement speeds over water?
