Subject: 8JULY12 - Suspended Accounts Change
Date Posted: 08 Jul 2012 at 17:42
We have made a change to the way suspended accounts now display in game. Players who have voluntarily suspended their own accounts now show as (Abandoned) after their player name. GM suspended accounts will no longer publicly display the (Suspended) tag. Notice of suspension (as always) goes to the email address attached to the player's account and will display a "suspended account" error upon attempts to log in.

There are a couple of reasons for this change. First, to clear up confusion when a player abandons their own account. Often people speculate that they've had a GM suspension, which isn't correct, and flood the petition queue with questions about the status of the account. Since GMs can't comment on the status of accounts to anyone other than the account holder, this creates unnecessary confusion and distress.

The second reason relates to privacy concerns. If a player is GM suspended, having it publicly labeled goes against our own desires to maintain the privacy of account status and moderation decisions with our players. It also tends to create a lot of unnecessary questions about "why was so-and-so suspended" that GMs can't and won't answer anyway.

This change has been applied retroactively and will continue from this day forward. (There may still be a few lingering accounts that list as "suspended" rather than "abandoned" but those will be the last that list this way.)

As always, keep in mind that voluntarily abandoning your account is a permanent action that cannot be reversed by GMs.

*edit*
A pop-up warning now displays when you visit the map page and have your browser zoom level set above 100%. This is in a response to a high volume of petitions about map lag and performance that has been tracked down as related to browser zoom level. This message will only display once per session.

I do understand and support the reasons for the change, even though it will make it less convenient for those of us looking for inactives to siege or thieve.

There are very few GM suspended accounts, so you have mostly been sieging player manually suspended accounts. These can still be identified by (Abandoned)

This is a great leap forward in reducing confusion on the suspended status.

What about accounts that have been inactive for so long? Do they go abandoned for awhile, or do they just disappear once the appropriate timer hits them?

Accounts that are not abandoned by their owners using Abandon Account but are simply not played will not reach Abandoned status.  They just quietly disappear.

Well I guess we do it the old fashioned way, send them a letter, monitor them in Illytools (hoping they have a rton of prestige of course), and when there's no answer for a period of time, we siege them anyway.

It's true, and to me , wrong.

Can please developers consider the idea of having an "Abandoned" status for them too, so we can use those cities and have time to plan ? Not playing is a slower for of pressing the Abandon button :-)

@JimJams: I think the main issue with putting a status like abandoned on someone who is away for a bit, is that the player might decide to come back. So I don't think the devs will change this.

Nope and that is a good way to start something. Try waiting 3 weeks.

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so you will not be dependent on anybody.

Have suspended/inactive/abandoned cities randomly teleport on the map and go under the control of the nearby faction/NPC then players would get a chance at the towns and the factions would have a supply of cities( leave out -100 pop towns they just clutter the map)

You could also check to see if the mail has actually been read after 3 days/weeks.

edit* this was not aimed at Quackers or Rorg, just an informative post for those new to the game.

Splended suggestion!
But why have them teleport? There's always a nearest faction - the time before conversion could be made to increase with distance to and standing with the faction.

You might be not interested to capture or raze cities belonging to your nearest faction if you want to survive another week in Illy...Wink

I keep getting this message despite having a zoom level of 100%, whenever my browser window is not maximized.  Chrome, Windows 7.
