SQUARE WINNER PRIZES

Each Square Winner will receive:
  • 5M Gold Pieces from King Sigurd, delivered to the Alliance Coffers
  • Each winning Alliance Member who participated in the occupation will receive 50 King's Praetorian Guardsmen (unique units)
  • Each winning Alliance Member who participated in the occupation will receive 100 Prestige points to spend as they wish
DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES

Prizes will be distributed to each player and alliance over the next couple of days.

Unit rewards will be granted to the Capital Cities only.

Winning Alliance members who will receive the rewards are listed under each reward square's post (click on the square name listed above under the "Square Winners" heading)!

One slight snag is that - until the release of UIv2 - players cannot assign these unique units into armies; they can only be left in the Unit Pool at the moment.

However, this is probably a good thing, because King Sigurd's Praetorians are terrible attackers.  But they defend well. Oh yes.

STATISTICS

Some overall stats below, and individual square-by-square stats can be found from the square links (above) or elsewhere in this thread.

Many congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone who participated, and there'll be more tournaments coming soon!

Best wishes,

SC

I can confirm, these are the stats we are looking for.

Many many thanks to the GMs for this tournament. It was great fun and really good to have gone on so long and to have been so all encompassing.  Great stuff.

Special  mention to the-dude for all his efforts. People like him - player participants - really lift these events and make them something even the gm s couldnt hope for.

I admit, that too. ^^

At least I got #1 in some stat... not the sexiest one by far, but most casualties defending the S flag is something at least. Approve

LWO did a super nice job getting into the top 10 attacking casualties for a relatively small alliance.

Amazing stats! Thanks, SC!

The only ones that  I would love to see (not sure if they're easy or not, if not then no biggie) would be how many casualties individuals and alliances CAUSED in their attack and in their defenses...

(strikes me as a better indication of their effectiveness than how many casualties they received, no?) (maybe possible to run script where it takes total casualties for each engagement - total casualties received and creates a table of casualties inflicted and totals them up for individuals?)

Just an idea...

But love, love, love the breakdown! Thanks!

Kumo

ps. so HM gets the Most Vicious Bastard Award and Pasi gets the Pinata Award? ;)

We don't have the right to title it, it is already named, per the tournament rules.

...This just sounds *so* very very wrong in Norwegian.

And if anyone goes and tries to translate why, I will have to get out the pink pen of modifying doom!

That said..I guess....*snuggles everyone except hora for nationalist reasons*

GM StormCrow--

H? has deliberated and voted and our choice for location to put the Victory Obelisk is (-282, -511).
Please let us know if there is any wording flexibility...

Thanks!

Maybe I'm giving out to much information here but... here it goes

Hora, the Norwegian spelling differs slightly from the Swedish, but the pronunciation is quite similar. If I "interpret" Strategos correct (in why it sounds sooo wrong) you could try your name from Swedish to English instead and that might end all confusion ...

eh...oh, damn...but that must be really colloquial than, as only the 4th translator I tried had it in his dictionaryConfused, (but I won't tell, which one)

and thanks Mr Andersson for telling me

if you try wikipedia, you'll only find translations for mediteranian (where it means hour), or czech (where it means mountain)

hmm... I'm actually a bit shocked now
so everyone who actually found out, that was the one meaning definitly not meant with my name!

btw: For everyone who not found out yet, it's actually not that bad a word, at least noone is attacked by it directly (I interpreted Stratgos's comment "nationalist reasons" wrong there). So hopefully no harm done Wink

kindly
Hora (the better translations meant hereSmile)

aw...

Google Translate guesses by default that hora is Spanish and means 'time'.

Let us just say that 'Hora' is a common dialect word for a specific person belonging to the second oldest profession in the world.

hmm...grr...
before I have to mail everybody on it, I'll just tell evryone  Wacko

Thanks to Strategos and MrAndersson I learned Scandinavian now LOL
"Hora" seems to mean a 'more kind' form of discribing a whore in swedish, which changes to "hore" in norwegian, and that's where Strategos fell over it.
Originally I had it from a book, where it was because of the latin meaning of "hour", and later I discovered the czech meaning of "mountain"

Hope evryone now knows it, and thus that matter is solved Clap

... /me thinks it would be an idea to move (or even remove?) this last part, as it really has no relation to the tournament, has it? Wink

Without wanting to go into one of my long preset speeches on Etymology which can and will send everyone to sleep...

The two main usages mentioned so far are actually the same.

Pretty much all western languages are descended from Sanskrit, on either side of the Centum-Satum Isogloss.

Hora is, as far back as etymologists can trace, a Sanskrit word taken from the root ahoratram meaning "day and night".  Hora, in the Sanskrit, pretty much means "time", but was mostly used in the context of night-time; and in modern usage tends to refer to "Astrology".

And so, yes there is an obvious linguistic connection between Hora and Hour simply because hours are the elements that make up day and night (ie time).

Equally pertinently, the "other" modern root to which everyone is obliquely referring is similar rooted.

Hora in the Latin (actually borrowed by Latin from the Greek and so on back to the Sanskrit) being feminine (ending in -a) therefore has connections to "Woman of the Night".  I think you see where this is headed, and how we ended up with the word everyone's avoiding.

Same root.

As it were.

/me goes to bed

[EDIT Addendum for completeness sake:  There's an alternate theory that the "we shall not speak of" usage of the word that we spell with a "w" in English actually comes from the PIE root qar (which gave us the Latin for "carus" (dear) etc) via Proto-Germanic; but I've generally been unconvinced by that explanation; given that phrases such as "Woman of the Night" and/or "by the hour" persist to this day.  The truth might lie somewhere inbetween in the linguistic equivalent of a mashup.]

As a slight (though not quite as impressive) addendum to Stormcrow, I can say that "to hear" is "høre" in Norwegian.

And for those unfamiliar with the rather unique scandinavian letters, ø and o are as different as p and q (or a and å ;) )

Interesting.  There's no really concrete tie of "hear" (or "here", as these words only separated post 1180AD) to PIE/Sanskrit; maybe it's a Proto-Germanic thing.

[EDIT:

Actually, not interesting to most everyone.

/me really must get back to bed

comes from gotic "hausjan" and goes to nordic "heyra" (from wiki)
in german it's "hören", and in upper palatinate bavarian still "heyern"

Hmm... didn't know up to now, that Suaheli is Proto-germanic Wink, and I really find that topic interesting Geek
