Hi everyone,

It's come to our attention via a player petition that there's some Real Money Trading (RMT) going on in Illyriad.  We've investigated it and - in association with our partner PayPal - have confirmed that it's true.

RMT is where players sell goods or services in game in exchange for Real Money, paid directly to them via PayPal, Steam, eBay etc.  RMT is specifically banned in our Terms of Service (2.2 "You must not sell, rent or sub-licence material from our website" and 2.4 "You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy or otherwise exploit material on our website for a commercial purpose;"), and is - as everyone knows - also prohibited by pretty much every MMO out there, so there is no possible "innocent" explanation here.

It's always been a sign of a game "coming of age" when there is both a demand and a supply of RMT; so it's peculiarly flattering, in a way, that this niche browser-based RTS has attracted RMT sellers.

The reason RMT is banned in pretty much every MMO out there is simply because we, the providers of your entertainment environment, need to be fed and watered, keep servers running, bandwidth flowing etc - and RMT not only undermines our income, but also allows players to unfairly profit from our enterprise, our work and our intellectual property, developed over many, many years.  It's taken our time and development to make Illy and RMT undermines our ability to keep it going.

We've uncovered and permabanned the obvious main culprits, but are digging deeper, and may be permabanning others in due course; it appears that different front end accounts were used to negotiate sales versus actual gold transfers.  Not only was gold up for sale, but accounts as well, and we'll be delving into these over the next few hours and days.

Recipients of RMT accounts will have those accounts removed from the game.  We've decided not to permaban the recipients of RMT gold, but we're 100% aware of who you are, and we want you to know that we're now actively monitoring your accounts for misbehavior of this type in the future.  Cue petitions from RMT recipient players saying 'omg, I had no idea this was illegal, but I was absolutely fine taking the ingame mails and private convo price negotiations off to slack'.  Thin ice, you people; very thin ice.

Selling anything in Illyriad for your own real money gain is strictly prohibited.  Please be warned that we have no tolerance for this, at all, ever - and from now onwards will also be permabanning the recipients of any RMT transactions whether for gold, or accounts, or something else.

Regards,

SC

EDIT: Typos, addition of 2.4 from the Terms & Conditions

Did you get the guy who was selling his accounts? Or just his messenger?

It might be interesting to know who exactly were banned/warned.

That won't be forthcoming Small Boy - the devs never discuss things like that with anyone but those directly concerned.

Do banned accounts just disappear like abandoned accounts?

Any accounts deleted should be evident from the differences in the player and town datafiles tomorrow.

Well, at the end of the day, it's beneficial to the game for this not to be happening. Dilly Dilly.

will any of these towns from the cheaters be up for grabs?

Date Posted: 27 Mar 2018 at 00:42
Depends on how the devs implement. If an Abandon then they will still be around. If a Delete then the towns vanish.

I really wish it was a forced abandon. It seems that many times the account owner just can't log in anymore, and the account(s) just silently rot until they eventually auto-delete. The problem I have with that approach is that the cheater tells his alliance mates--or they just see the inactivity on their roster--and so they reap the rewards of the advanced resources and then the towns themselves.

The accounts should either be visibly abandoned, or else insta-vaporized.

I agree with TK - the towns should be deleted instantly.

I have not thought it all thru but at first blush I agree with TenK as well.

Maybe not deleted instantly, but there should definitely be some sort of marker to show what's happened...

Not only would this allow people to go after the towns of suspended accounts but if there were a lot of them they would act as a deterrent as people could see around them evidence that the rules are not to be messed with.

Thanks for the heads up and action by the Devs.   Yes, I agree with TenK, it would be good to have them vaporized from the game unless that impedes your internal tracking.

There is no place for this nonsense in Illy.

I think making a public example of people is what the devs are trying to avoid. Probably a commendable notion. I just think it has to be balanced against letting the culprit's buddies benefit from the secret information. The (Abandoned) tag is generally what sets the scavengers in motion towards the warehouse with thieves.

Terrain squares with a smoking hole in the ground should be the only trace left of the accounts

" We've decided not to permaban the recipients of RMT gold".......mistake.  They knew full well what they were doing like a radar hack in a shooter game.  Boot them.

One player all predicted this a few years ago.

his enrollments were deleted and he was removed from the forum.

I support, thank you for this action, and please do everything within your powers and capabilities.

Do this game for everyone.

fair game, I thought

At a minimum post their shameful names.

The devs will not post any names. I doubt we will ever have a full understanding of what has happened.

What do you mean he's the King of Mal Motsha? He's been collared fair and simple. He's coming with us and he can bring all his silversteel with him! Stern Smile

The masses do enjoy a public hanging.

I prefer the ill-obtained resources not be left available for others.  My dumb thieves just bring back basic res each time anyways.

Stupid thieves.

A few new statues or tombs for a quest ought to do it.

Thanks a lot for informing us on this foul play. Great to see it doesn't pay to cheat in the long run. I'm very curious who these players were, but I actually do appreciate the fact the devs don't give such information.

Doesn't a public hanging somewhat fit with the time period illy is set in- medieval?

I hear the seller was NOT banned and is still actively playing his multiple (4+) accounts...that the player spends big on the game and is high profile are also rumored.

I also would like to speculate with a lack of sources... but I have all of the Sisyphean tasks on my plate that I can handle at this time.

That has rarely been used for players who passed on after making a rare contribution of the game such "Shrapnel".  It should not be used for those subject to permabans. Stern Smile
