That depends.  Do rays beat lasers?  Rays have a cone-shaped area of effect, but lasers are generally considered more powerful in SciFi, and they can cut.  Then again, rays generally work well in air and water, and lasers not so well in water.

Also, antennae might serve as some form of counter to rays, but offer no defense against lasers.

Erm...back to topic, I think wild ostriches would be great for desert biomes.  I can't say it would make a very important difference, but I presume the effort to implement is rather small anyway.

Oy - how about sandworms like those in "Dune" -or the movie "The Worm" with Kevin Bacon?
 
That would be a cool landbased counterpart to the seamonsters!
