The Coming of the Magic Coyotes
A long time ago, "a way out south" in the Broken Lands there lived the peaceful and benevolent, Magic Coyote. His existence was never troubled much because he was, as the saying goes, "smarter than the average magic bear." Most days he simply sat around drinking his Illy Beer, reading his ACME catalogs and enjoying himself in the desserts of the Broken Land. But alas, one day things changed. Why the Magic Bears sent the package, the Magic Coyote would never know. What was in the package, though, was strange and yet exciting. For as he examined it, every so often he could hear a quite but persistent, "beep beep." "Beep Beep" over and over. Strange, he thought to himself, what could be making that noise? But being a wily Magic Coyote, he decided that before opening that strange package, he would read the accompanying note first. When he did, he was even more perplexed, for the note said" "Please accept this present as a token of our fealty to the Magic Coyotes." It was signed by the Magic Bear himself. Well, that didn't surprise the Magic Coyote too much as it was a pretty well known fact that the Magic Coyote was more wily than all the Magic Bears put together, but that they would admit to the fact, that was surprising. For Magic Bears do have a lot of pride, as well they should being the second most magical creatures in Illyland. The Magic Coyote thought about that for a bit, but of course he still had to open this strange beeping package. So very carefully he cut the string tied around the box, separated the tape from the corners, and slowly, so slowly lifted the top ....to discover....a bird. A thin, nearly emaciated, strange looking bird with a big beak and the longest legs of any bird he had ever seen. And the bird said, "BEEP, BEEP" and took off, so fast that the Magic Coyote jumped back allowing it to escape. Well, you can imagine how that whole thing played out. The Magic Coyote chased that bird up one hallway and down another, up stairs and down stairs, into the kitchen, the bathroom and every other room in the house. And all the while that bird uttered it's strange chirp, "beep, beep," "beep beep," "beep beep." It nearly drove the Magic Coyote mad. But being the most wily of creatures eventually the Magic Coyote decided that it would be better to let the bird out of the house. And so he opened the door and in a flash the speedy bird raced away. The Magic Coyote sat down to wonder why the Magic Bears had sent that bird to him. But he could think of no reason for their questionable actions. In the end, as the sun began to set, the Magic Coyote came to the conclusion that it did not matter why the Magic Bears send the silly bird, for now that the bird had the wide open dessert in which to roam surely the Magic Coyote could return to his peaceful reading of the ACME catalogs of whcih he was so fond. Or at least that's what he thought.....to be continued. |
