Topic: Password reset? Posted: 12 Feb 2011 at 01:48 |
Since suffering a near cataclysmic computer error, I seem to have lost my password. What would be the correct method of reseting such a thing?

So, there is no way of getting back in, then, aside from then guessing? It seems somewhat obscene that the form would have password guarantee when the game doesn't.

To prove this wrong, I did lose my password like a week ago, I freaked out and hated to think all the newbie Orcs were catching up to me on population. Then I messaged one of the GM's about my dilemma and they laughed and reset the password.
That solves one problem..

I do believe there ought to be a way to request a password reset to be confirmed via email. It's a pretty standard way of doing things. The old-school way is to require users to correctly supply the same email address they used when registering the account, but in a situation like this it's very plausible that players would try to disrupt enemies by learning about any publicized email addresses, and spamming password reset attempts just to disrupt that enemy's online activity.
The more modern method is to make "password reset requests" instead generate an email with an link that when clicked will actually cause a reset if clicked very soon (i.e. within the next 24 hours, and only the most recent one for a particular account is valid). That would be especially appropriate for Illyriad, perhaps even with those reset tokens expiring in 2 hours.

How can I message a GM when I can't get into the game?
BTW, I hope that isn't a really stupid question.
