Is it possible to place two of your own cities in sqs directly beside each other? In theory is it possible? Would the system allow that? I know what you're thinking. Why would anyone want to? Just wondering.

I suggest taking a look around the map, especially the newbie ring. You will find many towns placed side by side. Some are placed that way and some spawn as rainbow towns. Rainbow towns will not spawn on sov squares, but they will spawn any other settle-able square. If you have a city in the newbie ring that does not do sov, it is very possible that new towns will spawn 1 sq from yours, and in fact, it happens all the time.
There are players who have placed their towns all together without any space in between towns, and it is not possible to siege some of their towns in the middle since there is a city on every available siege point. You would have to start sieging from the outside of the group and work your way in, to siege the towns completely surrounded by other towns. The downside of it for those players is their sov options are extremely limited or very expensive. The downside of it for those who want to siege those towns is it would take a lot longer than normal, but it is not impossible to seige towns placed in a tight cluster. We're used to things taking forever. |

When Illy first began, before sov became an option, it was common for players to place cities in a 3x3 cluster because it made it more difficult to siege. I recall Kumomoto having cities in a tight cluster like that when I first joined Illy -- I am sure there were other examples, and I may be misremembering that one, but as I recall he had a tight cluster on mountains.

I prefer towns to be 6 or more from each other for sov. But no other reason not to place them closer. The defense capabilities do increase with closer.
