For ten years the land of Redwood had been torn apart by war. Great battles had caused this once peaceful and fertile land to be drowned away in blood and death, the citizens of Redwood had endured the heartache and hardship of war for to long. The outcome of the war no longer mattered to all involved, all that mattered was that it ended now. That is exactly what was in General Tarpaulin's mind when he had gathered what was left of 5th legion and marched the disgruntled men from their families towards what was almost certain death. Tarpaulin's objective was simply; crush the rebellion and restore Senates power. What Tarpaulin had been failed to be informed of was the strength of the rebels hatred for the Senate and its laws. For the past ten years Tarpulin had been travelling from battlefield to battlefield fighting the rebels and trying to capture the elusive rebel leader known only as quickstep. Senate reports had narrowed the possibility of Quicksteps identity to either be Marcus  Rynon or Tag Reick, the heads of respected noble families in Redwood.

The sun was setting on a crisp Autumn evening when Tarpaulin looked out over the latest battlefield and towards the rebel camp. Legion scouts had estimated the rebels numbers to be roughly 10,000. Tarpaulin had finally trapped the rebels in a ridge between the Carrock mountains and the Red sea, with nowhere to run they set up camp for their final stand. Ten years Tarpaulin had waited for this moment. There would be no mistakes, or so he hoped. With a sigh of satisfaction and dread he gave the order for the men to commence their attack at dawn. This was it. Either Quickstep was going down or he was.

The sun glistened between the clouds and a cool breeze engulfed those standing in the ridge. Marcus Ryon stood proud and dignified while watching his men prepare for their stand. Marcus- or Quickstep (something he had been known as for the last 10 years) always found it rather amusing that he was never identified as the leader of the rebels for the last 10 years. The idea of hiding behind the persona of quickstep had been his uncles, it signified his elusive nature and it served to protect his families honour in the Senates court. As far as the other noble families knew, he and Tag were studying abroad and not plotting an end to the senates rule in Redwood. The war was going badly for Marcus- that much was true and he kept asking himself was the death he had cause worth it?, he knew he was largely responsible for the grief of families throughout Redwood yet he assured himself that he had no choice, the Senate had pushed things to far. Marcus remembered their destruction of Collack street and the massacre of helpless peasants. All they wanted was f***ing food he thought bitterly and yet the Emperor deemed his latest tournament to be more important. When the peasants refused to pay the taxes intended to finance the tournament on top of their yearly tithe to the crown and proceeded to ask for more food instead- they were met by the full brutality of the 5th legion who pillaged them of every thing they owned and loved. Marcus had been a young man back then- recently taken over the leadership of his family from his father who had died suddenly. But from watching the destruction of Collack street Marcus knew the Senates rule had to end in Redwood. And that he would be the man to make that happen.

Gather allies for the rebellion had been a difficult task. Some nobles like his good friend Tag had answered his call to arms without question, others-well they waited to see how the rebellion would likely end. Some chose to remain loyal to Senate and where later called cowards by the nobles in Marcus' court. Others eventually joined Marcus after their careful considerations. As he gathered what was left of his court for a final briefing of the battle, Marcus realised that defeat tomorrow would result in certain death for all. The question was would they have a warriors death? or would they have to suffer the brutal humiliation of a public execution. Marcus pushed that thought out of his mind and took moment to gather himself. This was it. Either Tarpaulin or himself were going down. "And i'm not going down without a fight "  Marcus thoughout.

"Sir, it is time" - Tarpaulin heard the voice coming from outside the entrance of his tent. Groaning he got slowly out of bed and began to help put on his armour with the help of his squire. His armour had once been his fathers, the Tarpaulin crest of a wild bear engraved upon its chest plate. Scratches surrounded the crest, proving his courage in battle. It was remarkable that he had not suffered serious injury despite ten years on the front. Today he would finally retire, providing  the battle went to plan. "Tell me boy, what do you hope to do when this is over?", Tarpaulin said suddenly to his squire, surprising even himself. " I- I want to go home sir", his squire stammered nervously. "Where is your home?", "Port Oliver, sir". Tarpaulin knew the area well. The people of Port Oliver were skilled fishermen and sailors arguably the best in all of Redwood. " Why are you here then?- surely you should be learning the tricks of sailing and fishing by now?", " Normally, one would learn on their fathers boat at my age- but my father died when I was young ,sir"  his squire became suddenly quiet . Tarpaulin understood the pain of losing a loved one, he too suffered the grief of his fallen comrades throughout his military career. "Come on then" he said after a pause, "Let's end this and we both can home".

The cool breeze and the sound of birds greeted them as Tarpaulin climbed onto his horse. It was a magnificent specimen, with a glossy white coat and long proud legs. Tarpaulin broke into a trot and went with his guard to the battlefield. The men nodded as he passed saluting him with the cry of General as he passed, however Tarpaulin sensed their restlessness as they spoke. A feeling he too knew only to well. The rebels camp grew more and more into view, it was well defended and would be difficult to capture. Normally, Tarpaulin would consider a siege given the fact that the rebels had no where to go. However after ten years of disobedience, the Emperor wanted to send a message to all of his citizens- no one was to be left alive. Tarpaulin took one last look at the rebels camp and then at his squire beside- "Fire the catapults!" he barked.

The smelling of burning ash filled Marcus' nostrils as he watched the Legion's catapults fall with deadly precision across the battlefield. His men were afraid- and quite rightly so, given that a burning ball of death might have their name on it. While confusion began to trickle through his ranks, the scouts reported that the legions infantry was begin to march towards the walls. "Tell the archers to advance onto the walls and the infantry to find cover until the bombardment has ceased" Marcus barked at Tag. Tag headed without delay gather the archers together before indicating towards the wall. Meanwhile the infantry found cover wherever they could. Finally the bombardment ceased and the sound of Legion trumpets pierced the air. Marcus ran up onto the wall and looked over towards the advancing enemy. "Ready when you are sir" Tag said beside him. Marcus looked over at his closest friend, the man who never doubted or questioned him  throughout their doomed campaign. A man who would gladly wait execution with him and would never blame, Marcus wouldn't let that happen to a man so loyal. If the battle went wrong he would kill Tag before that could occur. "Good " he said simply to his dear friend, but he gave him a look that he hoped would express the gratitude he could never say. "Archers prepare yourselves" Marcus bellowed to those around him. Instantly the archers pulled back their shots in anticipation.  Marcus looked towards the enemy near the gates and smiled. "Fire!" he yelled with all his might. It was a good day to die.
