Newbie questions:

When choosing an alliance is it best to choose one with members close to me?

What order should we do research and buildings in?

Thanks

You can move your capital 1 time, research what alliance fits your needs and what you want.  Then you should move towards them.  Please make sure that you check the faction they are near and move to an area that is on the neutral or positive side of the faction.  If there is an alliance near you right now that you want to try, please do.

Research  should be City first, and the others fall in as you upgrade.  The City section gives you the buildings that you need to do further research as well.  As you upgrade buildings, it unlocks further research.  :)  As you build your Consulate, start building your diplomats a little at a time before you know it you have a good defense in your city.  When your ready, then work on troops in barracks a little at a time.

I wish you the best in this game.  If you have an questions, please feel free to send me a mail in game and I will be happy to answer or get an answer for you.

Best Wishes,

Larna,

RE: Alliances - proximity to other members of your alliance is helpful because you can move supplies and troops to each other faster.  However, many alliances are very dispersed.  The most important aspect of any alliance is how well you get along with the other members.  The second most important aspect is how active you and the other members are in Illy.  It takes time to learn these things which means that you will likely not remain with your first alliance forever.  For this reason, you might wish to reserve your free capital city move until you have a better feel for which alliance you like.

RE: developing a city: resource production and storage are very important to develop in the early phase of a new account.  A lot of new players focus on military quickly which I think is a mistake for these reasons: 1) any army a small player can produce and maintain is incapable of doing anything except die and give XP to another player; 2) you do not need the tax load of supporting an army while you are focusing on early city growth; and, 3) smaller players suffer diplo attacks with far greater frequency than army attacks.

Until you are in a position to build and support at least 50 basic thieves, I would not spend resources on diplo defenses.

Your best defense as a small player will be a Rune.  This means that the Mage Tower will be your most important building.  It is also the most expensive and time consuming to build.  Your early goal should be a Death Rune to kill 20 attacking units.  Your mid-range goal should be obtaining the Killing Glyph.  This will kill 75 units entering your city.  And your longer-term goal will be Ward of Destruction which will kill 250 units.  Be sure to pay attention to which research path you persue in Magic as you are limited to a single school at first - so you want to research Runes before Geomancy and Blights.

You will also want a Marketplace so you can build Caravans to harvest resources on the map and trade with others.

Good luck and good gaming.

Thanks for the advice Big smile

If I was to move, would being somewhere that looks fairly busy be a disadvantage for finding resources?

And how on earth do I decide between so many alliances? It's a bit overwhelming LOL

Thanks

Yes it would be a disadvantage as you grow as well.

You have to know what you are looking for and what you want to do.  You should find an alliance that fits your needs to learn the game.

I don't see this name Larna in the game other than one close to it attached to an alliance already.  So people don't know how to contact you with invites as it is.

The battlefield is a scene of constant chaos. The winner will be the one who controls that chaos, both his own and the enemies.

My best advice to the new player would be to read what The Dude wrote.  Don't be in a hurry to move your city, and don't build any settlers until you do.  There is a thread here in The Forum for alliance recruiting, but you are not required to join an alliance.  In the meantime keep reading the help threads and others' questions.  Welcome and have fun.
